5 Safety Features Standard on a Yanmar

Safety isn’t something to be taken lightly. When you work long hours, often alone, knowing your machine is equipped to keep you safe is critical for peace of mind. Learn more about the safety features standard on all Yanmar tractors and how they help reduce your risk on the job.

Standard Yanmar Safety Features

There are five primary safety features standard on Yanmar tractors. While they play a very important role, they’re integrated into everyday operation so you have one less thing to worry about. That being said, you should always understand how your machine keeps you safe. Here are the key safety features to know about on your Yanmar:

1. Rollover Protection Structure (ROPS)

Designed to prevent injury due to tractor overturn, ROPS have become an industry standard. It’s a system of bars that prevents the tractor from overturning completely. Instead, it can only overturn at 90 degrees, preventing the operator from being trapped under the full weight of the machine.

ROPS typically come in either a two-post or four-post format. A two-post features two upright posts mounted at the rear axle with a crossbar at the top connecting them. The four-post attaches upright posts at the rear axle as well as on the frame in front of the operator. It may also include a canopy across the top -- as seen on the Yanmar SA424DHX -- for additional protection from the elements.

2. Seat Belt

It should come as no surprise that all Yanmar tractors are equipped with seat belts. This basic, yet essential feature has saved countless lives. Beyond preventing you from being thrown from the operator’s seat, seat belts actually work in conjunction with the ROPS. The ROPS creates a protective zone, and without the seat belt you will not be confined to this safe area in case of overturn.

3. Overrun PTO Clutch

The overrun power take-off (PTO) clutch pertains specifically to the safe operation of tractor attachments. It allows the drive shaft to continue rotating when the machine is stopped, much like the freewheel on a bicycle. This is especially important when using an attachment such as a mower. Without a PTO overrun, the momentum of the blades could continue to propel the tractor forward, which leads to an unsafe condition after you’ve depressed the clutch to stop. This safety feature allows safe control of the tractor after the PTO is disengaged.

4. PTO Guard

As the PTO transfers power from the tractor to an attachment, the shaft is rotating at a rapid speed. At 500+ RPM, contact with the apparatus can grab the operator and pull them toward the moving parts in a fraction of a second. A PTO guard acts as a protective shield. It prevents the operator from getting clothing or body parts caught and pulled into the PTO.

5. Safety Start Switch

The safety start switch is equipped on every Yanmar tractor. It’s designed to prevent the tractor from starting in gear and potentially striking or running over the operator. The switch requires you to be in the operator’s seat so the machine can’t be started improperly from the ground. This feature also helps the tractor come to a quick stop in dangerous situations should you leave the operator’s seat for any reason. 

General Tractor Safety Tips

Yanmar tractors go above and beyond with standard features that enhance operator safety. However, operating one of these machines is far from foolproof. As you work your land, keep these general tractor safety tips in mind.

• Read the owner’s manual. The manual is much more than a casual guide. It’s essential to understanding the safety features of your tractor and how they work.
• Perform regular maintenance. Knowing your tractor is in good working condition makes it much less likely something can go wrong and create a dangerous situation. Keep a Yanmar maintenance kit to make sure you’re using 100% genuine parts.
• Wear protective equipment. Understand your working conditions and get the right gear. This includes hearing protection, safety goggles, gloves, and securing loose clothing or hair.
• Start and stop safely. Always start your tractor on a level surface from the operator’s seat. Ensure the machine and all moving parts have come to a complete stop before exiting.
• Lock the ROPS. Some Yanmar tractors have foldable ROPS to help you navigate tight spaces. Once clear of low-hanging obstacles, this feature should remain locked securely in the upright position.
• Balance weight evenly. Tires should always be properly inflated before operation. Wheel weights or liquid ballast can be used to improve traction and stability in difficult conditions.
• Know the terrain. Before operating your tractor, assess the terrain. Watch for hidden obstacles such as stumps, large branches, holes, and rocks, as well as unstable or slippery surfaces.
• Avoid steep slopes. Whenever possible, avoid driving your tractor on steep hillsides. If operating on a slope, drive up and down instead of across.
